Trump selects Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, a former critic turned staunch ally, as his 2024 running mate

Former President Donald Trump has selected Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate for the 2024 election, marking a notable elevation for Vance, who has gone from a fierce Trump critic to one of his staunchest allies.

Short Summary:

  • Trump officially nominates J.D. Vance as his vice-presidential candidate for 2024.
  • Vance, originally a critic of Trump, has since become a loyal supporter.
  • This selection was announced at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

The announcement came during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Trump and Vance were officially nominated. Trump’s declaration on Truth Social stated, “After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio.”

Vance, originally a venture capitalist and author of the best-selling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” has a storied political journey. Elected to the Senate in 2022 with Trump’s endorsement, Vance’s rapid political ascent is notable for his sharp pivot from Trump critic to ally. In 2016, Vance had harsh words for Trump, calling him a “reprehensible” figure and a potential “America’s Hitler” in various public statements.

“Trump’s promises are the needle in America’s collective vein,” Vance wrote in a 2016 Atlantic article, where he likened Trump to “cultural heroin.”

Despite his initial disparagement, Vance reoriented his stance in 2021 while running for an open Senate seat in Ohio. Securing a last-minute endorsement from Trump, Vance won a tightly contested and expensive race. Vance has since become a prominent advocate for Trump’s policies, frequently serving as his surrogate on the campaign trail and helping to bridge connections between Trump and wealthy Silicon Valley donors.

This VP selection underscores a deeper alignment with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” agenda. From spearheading conservative culture war issues to vocalizing anti-establishment rhetoric, Vance resonates with the Trump base. He has been particularly vocal against diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, and his inflammatory social media presence has further galvanized supporters. Additionally, his ongoing opposition to foreign aid and support for trade barriers aligns with Trump’s vision.

“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump stated on his Truth Social platform.

Vance’s evolution from critic to ardent supporter was not lost on the media. Reporting from the RNC, Al Jazeera’s Patty Culhane noted, “He got a late-minute endorsement from Trump right before the primary campaign for that Senate seat and won. It was a very close race, a very expensive race.” This transformation has positioned Vance as a bridge between traditional Republican values and the more radical elements of Trump’s base.

However, the pick has not been without controversy. Vance’s past as a “Never Trump” advocate and his blistering critiques of Trump’s character have been points of contention. In August 2016, Vance told NPR’s Terry Gross, “I think that I’m going to vote third party because I can’t stomach Trump. I think that he’s noxious and is leading the White working class to a very dark place.” Later revelations confirmed that Vance had indeed voted for a third-party candidate in that election.

“Fellow Christians, everyone is watching us when we apologize for this man. Lord help us,” Vance tweeted in October 2016 after the “Access Hollywood” tape surfaced.

Despite his past comments, Vance has firmly cemented his role within Trump’s circle, even standing by Trump during the criminal hush money trial in New York. His steadfast loyalty and alignment with Trump’s vision have been key factors in his selection as VP.

Trump defenders argue that Vance’s transformation is a testament to his ability to lead and adapt. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine remarked, “He is consistent with Trump’s appeal to working men and women. It was wise for Trump to pick someone younger, someone who shares his desire to expand the base of the Republican Party.”

The Democratic response has been predictably critical. President Joe Biden described Vance as a “clone” of Trump, reiterating that Vance’s policies are as extreme as Trump’s. Biden campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon commented, “Vance will do what Mike Pence wouldn’t on January 6: bend over backwards to enable Trump and his extreme MAGA agenda, even if it means breaking the law and no matter the harm to the American people.” These statements aim to paint Vance as an enabler of Trump’s contentious policies and rhetoric.

“He’s a clone of Trump on the issues,” Biden remarked. “A clone of Trump on the issues, so I don’t see any difference.”

Vance’s selection also places additional scrutiny on his past statements about abortion. Known for his conservative stance, Vance has pushed for a national ban on abortion, a position that starkly contrasts with many Democratic principles. In November 2023, Vance told CNN that Republicans need to advocate for a national standard on abortion, terming it a crucial issue that needs a decisive stance within the GOP.

“There needs to be some more interest in this building among Republicans in setting some sort of minimum national standard, whether that’s 15 weeks or 20 weeks or the different ranges that are thrown out there,” Vance told CNN’s Manu Raju and Ted Barrett.

In addition to his MAGA credentials and conservative policies, Vance also brings ties to Silicon Valley to the presidential ticket. His experience as a venture capitalist and his connections within the tech industry offer an interesting juxtaposition to traditional Republican values.

As the 2024 election approaches, Vance’s role and his transformative journey will be critical areas of focus. His shift from a prominent critic to a loyal ally highlights the dynamic and often turbulent nature of modern American politics. With Trump’s endorsement and the vice-presidential nomination, Vance is set to remain a significant figure within the Republican landscape, navigating both his past criticisms and his staunch current support for Trump.

The coming months will provide further opportunities to assess the impact of this decision on the Republican campaign. While Trump’s selection of Vance signifies a commitment to loyalty and alignment with his principles, it also brings to light the varied and complex alliances that shape political narratives. As Trump and Vance prepare for the November election, their partnership will undoubtedly face scrutiny, not only from their political opponents but also from within their party and the broader electorate.
