ToggleThe Shooting: Latest Details
Time and Location
Charlie Kirk was speaking at a Turning Point USA event called the “American Comeback Tour” at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. About 3,000 people were gathered outdoors in the campus courtyard. The shooting occurred at 12:23 p.m. MDT, about 20 minutes after the event began.
How It Happened
Kirk was seated under a tent, answering a question about mass shootings and transgender people. As he spoke, a shot rang out. The bullet struck him in the neck. He collapsed as blood was visible.
Shooter’s Location and Scene Description
Investigators say the gunfire came from the roof of the Losee Center or a nearby campus building, about 140 to 200 yards away. The suspect was wearing black tactical gear, a mask, a helmet, and aviator-style glasses. A bolt-action Mauser .30-06 rifle was recovered near the scene. Some bullet casings had political or provocative inscriptions.
Witness Accounts and Police Action
Witnesses described panic, with people dropping to the ground and then running. Officers launched a campus lockdown and search. Thousands of tips poured in to the FBI. A manhunt ended with the arrest of Tyler James Robinson, 22. Authorities say he acted alone. Robinson is not cooperating with investigators, but his friends and family are.
Hospitalization and Death
Kirk was rushed in critical condition to Timpanogos Regional Hospital. He was later pronounced dead that same day.
Charges and Motive
Robinson faces charges of aggravated murder and felony firearm discharge. Investigators say his writings and digital messages showed ideological differences with his conservative family and signs of political radicalization. A clear motive has not been confirmed.
Official Statements
President Trump announced Kirk’s death on Truth Social and ordered flags at half-staff. Politicians from both parties condemned the killing. Utah’s governor called it a “political assassination.” Trump has said Kirk will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously.
Memorial
A public memorial service is planned for September 21, 2025, in Arizona. Kirk’s widow, Erika Frantzve, said Turning Point USA will continue its work despite the loss.
