While the federal government has extensive powers, they are limited to the powers given to it by the United States Constitution. If a power is not explicitly granted to the federal government in the constitution, it belongs to the states or the people and not the federal government. This comes from the Ninth Amendment, limiting the federal government’s powers to what the constitution gives them.
